The Shinai – The Soul of Kendo
What is a Shinai?
The shinai is the training sword used in Kendo. Traditionally made from four slats of bamboo held together with leather fittings, it allows practitioners to train safely, while preserving the spirit, distance, and precision of the Japanese sword.
But the shinai is more than just a tool.
It is the first companion of the kendoka, revealing posture, intention, and state of mind.
A History of Tradition and Evolution
In the past, sword training was conducted using wooden swords (bokken), often resulting in serious injuries. The shinai was created by ancient masters with a clear purpose:
to preserve life while maintaining the truth of combat.
Even today, despite modern innovations, the shinai remains faithful to this spirit:
Respect tradition, protect the body, forge the mind.
The Different Parts of the Shinai
A shinai is composed of several essential elements:
-
Take (竹): the four bamboo slats
-
Tsuka-gawa: the leather handle
-
Saki-gawa: the leather tip
-
Tsuru: the string representing the back of the blade
-
Nakadome: the fitting that secures the tsuru
Each part has a precise role. A properly assembled and well-maintained shinai is a guarantee of safety, respect for one’s partner, and quality of practice.
Choosing the Right Shinai
Selecting the right shinai depends on several key factors:
1. Size
Size is regulated by the federation and depends on the practitioner’s age and gender. An improperly sized shinai can negatively affect posture, speed, and accuracy.
2. Weight and Balance
A good shinai must be well-balanced—neither too heavy at the tip nor too light. Balance directly influences tenouchi (hand grip technique) and the quality of strikes.
3. Type of Bamboo
-
Smoked bamboo: more durable, firmer feel
-
Natural bamboo: more flexible, softer sensations
The choice depends on experience level, training frequency, and personal preference.
Maintenance: An Act of Respect
Caring for one’s shinai is a responsibility of every kendoka.
-
Regularly check for splinters
-
Sand the bamboo slats when necessary
-
Replace worn leather fittings
A neglected shinai is a danger to oneself and others.
A well-maintained shinai reflects a right and sincere spirit.
The Shinai, a Mirror of the Mind
In Kendo, it is often said:
“The shinai reveals the heart.”
A shinai wielded with violence, fear, or haste exposes one’s inner state.
A shinai guided by presence, accuracy, and sincerity becomes a true extension of body and mind.
